Featured: The Smalley Family
Spring and Fall family photo sessions are my favorite.
The light in Louisiana from mid October to December is glorious. Because the sun is slightly lower in the sky, you can shoot with more time before the sunset and still get such dreamy images that don’t wind up too bright. Midday sun can be harsh, but it’s not as harsh this time of year!
This particular day began with clouds and a light rain. Overcast lighting for portrait sessions can be so lovely and smooth. It was still such a pleasant surprise when the sun broke through the clouds. The trees were wonderfully dark from the recent rain. Sunrise was in the early half of the six o’clock hour and our session wasn’t scheduled until 8 am.
We didn’t start shooting until close to 8:30am. At least two hours after sunrise. The light was still PERFECTION.
Planning what to wear for your fall family photos.
When you begin planning your outfits for your family photos, I highly recommend chatting with your photographer about colors that suit their editing style and compliment your chosen location. Navy blue, deep gold, and other neutral or earthy tones are always a favorite of mine. I also love emerald or moss green and pink.

During your photo session.
At every family session I make extra efforts to include single pictures of each family member. So often folks get wrapped up in trying to get group shots that they forgot to honor the individual. Also, how often are you likely able to dress up and get professional portraits once you become a parent? Pretty much never.
